How to Fix Water Damage in a Light Fixture

6/12/2019 (Permalink)

Water in light is not a situation that should be left unattended

Water Damage on Your Light Fixture? Follow These Steps

Owning a home in Rosebud, TX, has many benefits, but water damage is not one of them. Unfortunately, busted pipes or a leaking roof can cause water in light fixtures to build up. You may not notice the problem until the water starts dripping onto the floor. As soon as you notice an issue, be sure to follow these steps.

Take Proper Precautions

Water and electricity is a dangerous combination. It is of the utmost importance to take the proper precautions. Before doing anything else, you should shut off the electricity. This does not just mean flipping the switch; it should be done with the breaker box, which can be found in the garage or another room of the house. Once this is done, the water can start to be wiped up.

Find the Source

Clean up is important, but unless the source of the problem is found, the water in light fixture will continue. If you notice any ceiling damage, the problem may be from the roof. Another reason that this issue occurs is due to a busted pipe. You can choose to find and fix the problem yourself or hire a water damage expert to do the job for you. Either way, you should have it taken care of right away in order to prevent it from spreading any further.

Cleanup the Damage

Once the water is turned off and the source of the problem has been taken care of, it is time to clean up the damage. You can use a variety of machines, such as a shop vacuum to suck up the excess liquid. You can choose to rent the equipment or hire someone to do this for you.

If you feel at all uncomfortable with working with water and electricity yourself, you may want to hire someone to come help. Water in light is not a situation that should be left unattended, so either way, be sure to take care of the problem as soon as possible.

How To Identify the Type of Mold in Your Home

5/29/2019 (Permalink)

There are many different kinds of mold, and they don't all look the same.

If you suspect you have a mold problem in your home in Temple, TX it is best to get it inspected by a certified hygienist. One of the benefits of a professional mold inspection is that the specialists can determine not only how much mold damage you have but also the type of mold. These details can be a factor in how the mold is cleaned or how long it may take before you can reenter our home.

Mold Appearance

There are many different kinds of mold, and they don't all look the same. Mold can vary in appearance by:

  • Size
  • Texture
  • Color
  • Shape

You cannot always tell what kind of mold you have by the smell, but mold remediation experts can test to make the determination.

Specific Mold

If you suspect you have black mold in your home, there are a few indicators that can help you know for sure. Stachybotrys has a distinct odor that smells like strong, musty mildew. It is often found on walls, particularly in areas where a moisture problem exists. A mold inspection can confirm the kind of growth you see branching out near the water damage.

Black mold cleanup involves not only removing the slimy, green-ish black fungus from the affected area but also making sure the issue causing the moisture problem is remedied. House mold will just come back if there is enough moisture to feed it. By eliminating the instigating factor, technicians can prevent the growth from returning. While black mold does not tend to contaminate the air around it as readily as other types of fungus, it is also a good idea to use an air filter in the area to reduce the number of mold spores.

A mold inspection tells you not only what kind of mold you have but where it is located. Once the problem has been assessed, mold cleanup can begin.

How To Maintain Your Smoke Detectors

5/17/2019 (Permalink)

Fire cleanup experts advise that you test each smoke detector monthly

The number one way to keep your family safe during a fire is by having working fire alarms installed. Each smoke alarm in your home in Rosebud, TX, must be tested frequently and replaced if it is old or malfunctioning. An effective system lets you know as soon as smoke is detected so that you can lower your risk of being caught in the fire and hopefully lower your fire damage cleanup cost as well. Here are some simple ways to keep your system working properly.

Understand Power Source

In order to work, each smoke detector must have a power source. There are three main ways detectors are powered:

  • Hardwired into home electrical system
  • Powered by long-life lithium battery
  • Powered by 9-volt battery

If your electrical system is the source of your smoke alarm system’s power, you don’t have to change the batteries unless the detectors use them as a backup for when the power goes out. The 9-volt batteries must be replaced once a year. A lithium battery is part of the detector itself and thus needs to be replaced every 8-10 years as the detector expires.

Test Monthly

While it is important to pay attention to the date printed on your detectors, you cannot assume that your detectors work just because the expiration date hasn’t arrived. Fire cleanup experts advise that you test each smoke detector monthly. Press the test button in the center of the detector. If it doesn’t emit a shrill beep, you probably need to replace the detector. The sooner you know there is a fire in your home, the sooner you can call emergency services and have the fire put out so that it causes as little fire damage as possible.

Proper fire safety starts with having a working smoke alarm system. By making sure they stay powered up and testing them on a monthly basis, you can rest easy, knowing that you are protected.

3 Ways Hail Can Damage a Building

5/7/2019 (Permalink)

Hail on roof

3 Types of Damage Which Hail Can Cause at a Commercial Building

Hail forms within an air mass that has significant temperature falloff with height and updrafts. These conditions prevent precipitation from falling until spherical balls of ice have developed. The most damaging hailstones range from one inch in diameter to 1.75 inches or larger. Find out more about three types of damage, including roof damage, which hail can cause at a commercial building in Marlin, TX.

1. Functional Roof or Equipment Damage

The roofing materials on a commercial property should have an impact resistance rating that stands up to the average size of hail in the region. A roof may sustain bruises and materials can become cracked or dislodged. Hail can also damage unprotected HVAC equipment on a roof. Check the impact resistance of roofing materials and consider installing hail guards.

2. Leaks

After hail causes roof damage, water may start to leak into a structure. This can affect building materials and contents and require storm damage cleanup and restoration. It is a good idea to inspect the condition of a roof before and after a hailstorm.

3. Building Façade and Envelope Damage

Hail damage can also affect other parts of a building exterior and be cosmetic or functional, depending on stone size, wind speed and direction. Siding materials may sustain minor dents all the way up to major damage. Broken windows will admit moisture and debris into a structure. Building owners or managers should regularly arrange to have the building exterior and envelope inspected to limit the severity of storm damage.

These are just a few common types of damage that hail can cause at a commercial building. After a hailstorm in Marlin, TX, property owners or managers may want to arrange for damage mitigation and restoration professionals to assess damage. These experts can determine whether cosmetic fixes or major repairs are necessary for roof damage or other exterior damage.

What are the different types of smoke?

5/4/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Temple and Belton will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Temple and Belton will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting.

Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Don’t Risk Your Health; Toss These Items After a House Fire

5/4/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Damage can be devastating and it can take months to recover.

House fires can cause devastating damage and can take months, if not years, to recover from. In addition to the structural damage and damage to personal items, you will find that items not burned to a crisp have been severely damaged by high heat, water and smoke. If you run across these items, your first instinct may be to clean them and save them, but in many cases, doing so may be a bad idea. The fire restoration team in Temple, TX, warns homeowners against keeping all non-ruined items and advises them to throw away many seemingly “fine” objects.

Toss These Items After a House Fire

While some objects, such as clothing, furniture and household items, may be salvageable with proper cleaning, there are others that you should toss after a house fire, no questions asked.

Those items are the following:

  • Nonperishable foods
  • Perishables left at room temperature for too long
  • Medicines
  • Cosmetics
  • Burned clothing

Search your cabinets and refrigerator for any opened containers and anything stored in permeable packaging (think cardboard boxes or thin plastic bags). You may be able to salvage canned or jarred foods, unless they were extremely close to the heat. Canned foods exposed to high heats may not be edible anymore, as the heat can activate bacteria that causes the food inside to spoil. It is better to throw away those items than to risk consuming them and getting sick.

Toss out fruit, vegetables, bread and any other food items left out and vulnerable to the smoke in the air. Perishables left inside your refrigerator may be salvageable, depending on if your power went out, and if so, for how long it was out. Refrigerators are well-sealed and can generally keep items cold for up to four hours after the power is cut.

However, each situation is different, and the best thing you can do is open your own fridge and check for the following:

  • Smoky smell
  • Other odd odors
  • Soot in the fridge
  • Frozen foods that no longer feel cold

If you notice any of the above, throw away all food in the fridge, no questions asked.

What To Do When Insurance Falls Short

4/26/2019 (Permalink)

FEMA grants are intended to serve those who need it most.

If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, you probably have flood insurance. Ideally, this policy covers all your expenses when you need it. If a major disaster occurs in Belton, TX however, you may have needs that your coverage doesn’t quite meet. In these instances, you can apply for a FEMA grant.

What a Grant Can Cover

There are several types of emergency grants for which you can apply when you need disaster relief. These grants may cover expenses such as:

  • Property damage not covered by insurance
  • Medical expenses
  • Temporary housing
  • Emergency repairs

If you qualify for a grant, it does not have to be repaid, so you don’t have to worry about finding a way to come up with the money. While grants are not designed to replace flood insurance, they can help fill in the gaps.

What a Grant Doesn’t Cover

FEMA grants are intended to serve those who need it most. They are most commonly sought by people who live near a flood plain or other disaster-prone area. Although people of any income can apply for grants, those that pay for expenses such as repairs to personal property or moving expenses are awarded on the basis of income. You can apply for a grant even after flood mitigation specialists have already started the repairs on your home. Providing pictures of the damage before restoration began, however, may speed up the processing of your application.

Even if you have flood insurance, it doesn’t always cover all the expenses that come up when a major disaster strikes the area where you live. You may spend all your savings on your deductible and have nothing left for a place to stay while mitigation is in process. Government grants are designed to help you get the assistance you need without having to worry about paying the money back.

Be Proactive To Prevent Potential Commercial Plumbing Problems

4/19/2019 (Permalink)

Staying a step ahead of your plumbing issues can make all the difference.

Most any business owner in Belton, TX will admit that plumbing problems are among the most worrisome of potential mishaps they are concerned about. A broken pipe that causes a leak or a broken water main that floods an entire basement can be costly and inconvenient. But there are some things you can do to proactively prevent such disasters from occurring in your building.

Five Tips for Proactive Water Damage Prevention

1. Make sure your maintenance team regularly checks all toilets in the building for proper flushing and drainage. A slow draining toilet could mean the line is becoming blocked. Have the drain cleared and use a drain cleaner to dissolve grease and waste and use enzymes regularly to dissolve any tree roots that may be growing into the pipes.

2. Check for “silent” leaks. These are leaks that are not obvious but could potentially damage your plumbing, cause leaking or trigger flooding into the building. Have a plumbing service run a camera down your lines and into the water main periodically to check for these hidden leaks.

3. Today’s leaking faucet could become tomorrows broken pipe. Have any plumbing problems no matter how small repaired immediately. A small leak may not seem like much to worry about, but the pipe could be leaking underneath your building and damaging structural materials or growing mold.

4. Replace gaskets, valves, seals and connectors frequently. These small components can create larger problems if left unchecked. Replacing them will prolong the life of your fixtures and protect the areas around them.

5. Never “wait and see” how a problem will correct itself. Call in qualified professionals to repair or replace any problematic plumbing as soon as you notice it.

If, after all your efforts, the worst happens and you have plumbing problems that create flooding or water damage, be sure to quickly call in emergency water mitigation pros to help with cleanup and restoration of your business location.

Staying a step ahead of your plumbing issues can make all the difference. In this case, an ounce of prevention truly is worth a pound of cure.

Where Is Mold Most Likely To Grow in a Building?

4/15/2019 (Permalink)

Mold tends to grow in areas with high humidity levels where organic material is present.

Mold tends to grow in areas with high humidity levels where organic material is present. Here are six common places to find mold growth at a building in Belton, TX.

1. Bathrooms

Sinks and toilets increase moisture levels. Property owners and managers should install and operate ventilation rated for the size of each bathroom and keep facilities clean to prevent mold.

2. Carpet

Porous flooring materials capture and hold dirt. If carpeting becomes wet, cellulose or debris may support mold. An owner or manager should schedule regular cleaning and control high humidity levels to reduce the likelihood that fungus will form. Damage mitigation experts recommend tearing out and replacing carpet that remains saturated for longer than 48 hours or is exposed to contaminated water.

3. Cavity Walls

Mold may flourish behind walls after a plumbing leak or roof damage. Condensation can also accumulate if a building envelope is not sealed. Porous materials such as drywall, insulation or masonry can absorb moisture and support mold growth.

4. Ceiling Tiles

Porous ceiling tiles absorb moisture and dirt. Look for signs of discoloration after plumbing or roof leaks. Tiles with water damage may need to be replaced.

5. HVAC Systems

Dirt and moisture combine in condensate or drain pans, ducts and terminal units. An HVAC system should be regularly inspected and cleaned. Mold in ductwork can spread spores throughout a structure.

6. Water Heaters

A water heater is another appliance prone to condensation and leaks. Building owners or managers should have heaters inspected and flushed.

A building owner or manager can check these areas or arrange for professional inspections. If an owner or manager suspects that mold growth is occurring at a property in Belton, TX he or she should arrange for an indoor environmental professional or hygienist to perform testing and hire a commercial remediation service if indications of mold are found.

Everyday Causes of Flooded Homes

4/5/2019 (Permalink)

Storms Damage can be devastating for your home or business in Temple, TX. Storms or natural disasters can cause severe Water Damage.

What causes floods in homes?

When you think about what can cause a flooded home, odds are that you think of natural disasters, such as hurricanes or floods. You might also think about major defects, such as a foundation problem that can cause a basement to flood. If that’s the case, you feel confident that water damage isn’t something you’re likely to encounter. One thing that can happen to any home in Belton, Texas however, is a broken supply line.

About Supply Lines

A supply line is simply how clean water gets to different parts of your home. The most apparent example is a toilet supply line, typically coming out of the wall and running into the tank to keep fresh water available with every flush. Imagine what would happen if that line broke when no one was home for hours, perhaps even days. The water would run continuously, causing significant water damage and a flooded home. The good news is that there are experts in water restoration who can help if that occurs. The better news is that there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of a broken supply line.

4 Reasons Why Your Toilet Might Be Leaking

3/19/2019 (Permalink)

Be sure to have any leaks fixed as quickly as possible to avoid creating any larger problems.

4 Reasons Why Your Toilet Might Be Leaking

If a toilet in your Temple, TX home is leaking, it can cause quite a bit of annoyance and frustration, especially if you don’t know the cause. If the problem continues, it can not only create a mess in the bathroom, but it can also create lasting water damage. Here are some things that can cause a leaking toilet.

1. A Loose or Broken Seal

If the bathroom leak is causing water to gather around the base of the toilet, then a broken seal might be the culprit. Over time, the parts that keep your toilet connected to the floor can wear out and loosen causing the water to leak through the bottom.

2. Worn Out Tank Parts

The connection between the tank and the bowl is just as important as the connection between the base and the floor. If water from a leaking toilet is coming from the tank, you may need to tighten the pieces that connect it to the rest of the toilet. The flapper, which blocks tank water from flowing into the bowl, can become worn out as well.

3. Improper Toilet Installation

If your toilet is new but is still causing a bathroom leak, then it might have been installed incorrectly. If the parts of your toilet are not properly aligned, then the water will not be able to move through the system as it should. Water can build up in or leak through certain areas.

4. Old and Rusty Pipes

In some cases, the leak may not be caused by the toilet itself but by the pipes connected to it. Over time, these pipes can rust and crack. If you find a leak near the toilet but can’t find anything wrong with the unit itself, be sure to check the connecting pipes.

If you have plumbing problems such as a leaking toilet that might cause damage to your home, calling in a water damage repair service can save you some trouble. Be sure to have any leaks fixed as quickly as possible to avoid creating any larger problems.

What Does Mold Insurance Cover?

3/8/2019 (Permalink)

Homeowners insurance is an essential part of owning a house in Holland, TX.

What Does Mold Insurance Cover?

Homeowners insurance is an essential part of owning a house in Holland, TX. At some point, you may incur expenses related to mold damage. Your carrier may cover the costs under certain conditions. Not sure if your policy includes this hazardous fungus growth? Continue reading to learn more.

What Is Covered

Insurance providers have limits on their mold coverage. Insurers adhere to a policy feature called covered peril. This simply means they will address the fungus infestation if it results from something beyond the homeowner's control. Here are a few examples of these hazards:

  • Frozen pipes
  • Heavy ice, snow or sleet
  • Ice dam formations
  • Water overflow from HVAC systems, plumbing or household appliances
  • Pipe burst
  • Fire
  • Lightning

These are classified as "sudden and accidental" hazards that can lead to mold growth. Since these events aren't in the homeowner's control, your carrier will likely cover the damages.

What Isn't Covered

Generally, mold insurance doesn't cover damage that insurers consider preventable. For instance, there's a leak in your home because your 40-year-old roof has broken shingles. The water saturates the wood insulation, resulting in mold growth in the attic. From an insurance carrier's perspective, this could have been avoided if the old roof had been replaced. In this case, fungus growth is viewed as a home maintenance problem. Because of this, you would be responsible for paying for mold clean up and remediation services.

Check your homeowners insurance policy. The verbiage in the document may provide limited mold coverage. However, there is typically a cap, which means insurers may put limits on how much they will pay out for a mold-related claim.

In most cases, homeowners insurance covers mold damage for covered perils. A carrier won't pay for fungus growth problems resulting from poor home maintenance. If you're not sure whether your policy will take care of the damage, it's best to talk to an insurance adjuster in Holland, TX.

What Can You Expect With Storm Damage?

Ceiling damage due to storm

Storm Restoration

The first time that you return to your Temple, TX, building after a storm or a flood can be devastating. At first, the destruction may seem impossible to recover, especially with flooding and water damage. The idea of a complete tear out of the building can be daunting. Yet storm restoration is not impossible, and by knowing what to expect, you can create an effective recovery plan.

1. Getting Rid of the Water

The first thing you need to do before anything else is water extraction. This means getting rid of any standing water or water that may have flooded in recessed areas. In some instances, this is just a matter of wiping and mopping up, but in others, you may need to open drainage pathways or even use vacuum suction to remove the majority of flood waters from the premises.

2. Removing Wet Materials

The next step in alleviating storm damage is a complete tear out of wet materials that cannot be adequately dried in place and may even lead to mold and mildew. This includes carpet, wallpaper, and sometimes even floor tile. These materials not only become waterlogged but can also trap water underneath them, making it impossible for the building to completely dry out.

In the instances of extremely bad flooding, you may need to remove waterlogged wood or drywall. Once water has soaked into the building’s structural materials, many times those materials cannot be recovered and must instead be knocked out and replaced.

3. Drying Out the Structure

After you finish your tear out and dispose of waterlogged materials, you need to dry out the building completely. The easy way to do this is to open the windows and wait, but you can also use fans and other devices to hasten the drying process. Any waterlogged areas should get the most attention, and as they dry, they should be tested for structural integrity. It may require professional storm restoration services to ensure the safety of the building.

The Truth About Mold Kits

Mold testing in a Temple, TX home

Mold Testing and Its Effectiveness

If you are like many residents in Temple, TX, and enjoy the comfort of your cozy home, chances are you have worked hard to maintain it. The general upkeep of a house can be difficult, but finding that your space is also housing mold can make for a real challenge. The following facts can tell you a little more about mold testing and its effectiveness.

The Tests

Simply put, a mold kit is a device used to test for fungal growth in a variety of spaces. Most reveal results within 48 hours. Depending on the type, some kits can also analyze the type of mold that's causing all the ruckus.

At-Home Approaches

Homeowners have long turned to DIY mold tests as a way of discovering the truth behind those walls and under those carpets. The real truth, however, lies in the fact that these kits always test positive. To the surprise of many, only a professional can accurately tell you whether there is mold growing in your house. Other problems commonly found in these tests include faulty analyses, defected kits, and ambiguous results.

The Fine Print

Once you've consulted a professional to take over the mundane task of mold testing, there are certain aspects for the mold pros to consider. Usually, professionals must understand the following parts of a home before testing for mold:

  • Water sources
  • Construction
  • Drainage and leaks

These aspects of your home may seem unimportant but can actually give way to complex fungal problems. When a trusted professional can assess all angles of your pad, chances of full remediation are more likely.

Although the popular consensus may be that at-home mold testing is the way to go, the reality is that these kits simply don't catch all the problems. This is the point at which a proper test can show what's really going on with your cherished lair.

Preparing for a Flood

2/20/2019 (Permalink)

Prevent storm damage by cleaning your gutters

Flooding is one of the world’s most common and devastating natural disasters. Short but intense rainstorms in Temple, TX can cause a flash flood when the ground can’t absorb the onslaught of water fast enough. Runoff from buildings, parking lots and streets can overwhelm municipal stormwater sewers. This can sometimes cause black water to back up into your basement. There are ways you can manage flood damage to your home.

Protect Your Home

Here are some tips to help prevent storm damage and manage water runoff.

  • Clean your gutters. Debris can fill your gutters and downspouts and prevent water from your roof from being carried far enough from your home. Clean your gutters and make sure they don’t leak. Runoff from your house can actually erode the soil around your home and cause more water to collect.
  • Make sure storm drains are clear. If these drains get blocked, impervious surfaces cannot drain properly and can cause unnecessary flooding.
  • Install a backwater valve. If sewer water backup is a constant threat in your area, install a backwater valve onto your home’s sewer line. This prevents backups from flooding your basement. Avoid using excess water during these times because water flowing from your home will be reduced.

Follow Other Safety Tips

It is not only your house that you need to be worried about if a flood is imminent. If you know a flood is coming, be prepared. Evacuate your home if advised. Move to higher ground if there is a flash flood warning. This means flooding is occurring or will occur soon.

During a flood, avoid walking through moving water. This water may be swifter than you realize and cause you to fall. Abandon your vehicle if the waters rise around it.

After a flood, watch the news if possible. You want to make sure your community’s water supply is safe to drink. Be aware that water inside and outside your home may be contaminated by sewage, oil or gas.

Floods can cause a lot of damage. Prepare your home in advance to keep yourself and your family safe.

How to Prepare Your Property for an Oncoming Storm

Clear out gutters to avoid storm damage

2 Preparation Steps That Professionals in Restoration Suggest

Oftentimes, business owners will hear about a storm well in advance. While there are times that a flood watch could be little more than a false alarm, there are too many cases where it isn’t. It’s never a good idea to wait on storm preparation. Here are two preparation steps professionals in restoration strongly suggest to business owners to help them handle oncoming storms and flooding.

1. Clean Gutters and Storm Drains

Gutters and storm drains are your first defense against flood waters. If your gutters are clogged, then they may not be able to withstand the weight of storm debris. After all, the water will build up even more than if the gutter were clear, and this could cause extensive damage. Storm drains have a similar issue. If not cleared in advance, they could be clogged and this will cause the flood to be worse, as it has nowhere to run off.

2. Protect Your Important Items

In case of a storm warning with major flooding expected, you should remove all of your electrical appliances and valuables before the storm. This includes furniture and rugs. Anything that could be damaged by the water and will be a burden on your business shouldn’t be left behind. Once the storm hits, the rest happens quickly. You want to make sure you move these items in advance.

Winter Storm Damage: Preparation, Mitigation and Renovation

Prepare your building and exposed pipes for the coming winter.

Winter Storm Damage: Preparation, Mitigation And Renovation

When business owners hear the phrase storm damage, they likely think of hurricanes, tornadoes or other warm climate weather, but the winter months can be just as devastating. The frigid temperatures and ice and snow storms can lead to all types of property damage, but the costliest problem is likely a burst pipe. For that reason, it is key to prepare your building and exposed pipes for the coming winter.

1. Insulation

A frozen pipe is building pressure from the inside that may eventually force a break in the seal or explode out through cracking and breaking the line. To prevent a line break, you need to keep areas where exposed pipes are located warm. This means adding extra insulation to attics, crawl spaces and basements is likely best.

2. Installation

Another excellent way to protect exposed pipes from becoming a burst pipe is to add insulation or other heating elements directly to the pipe. You can purchase pipe sleeves or even UL-listed heat tape and install it over the pipe to help prevent freezing.

3. Relocation

A more expensive approach is to relocate exposed and exterior pipes to a warmer and interior location. You will likely have to hire a professional as this job may require special permits and a level of expertise beyond your skillset.

4. Restoration

While preparation and mitigation are effective solutions, you should find and resolve current plumbing issues before they become a problem. Established leaks only make exposed pipes more vulnerable. Consistent leaking can weaken the pipe and its seal while making the pipe more prone to freezing. Check your property for standing water as one common sign of leaking, and call a disaster remediation specialist in the Temple, TX area to help you resolve the issue.

A burst pipe can be detrimental for a business, possibly causing temporary shutdown for cleanup and restoration work. To prevent freezing during a winter storm, follow the above tips, and rest assured that your business is protected through the long winter months.

Why Does Smoke Damage Electronics?

12/30/2018 (Permalink)

Electrical fire in a Belton, TX home

The intense heat caused by a fire is likely to destroy electronics. Even exposure to smoke can cause irreparable damage. Find out more about why smoke damage affects appliances and devices and how this damage may be restored as part of a professional fire cleanup.

What Is In Smoke?

Smoke is a visible suspension of small particles. The composition of smoke may include:

  • Water vapor
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Nitrogen oxide
  • Volatile organic compounds
  • Toxins

The acidity of smoke causes metals to corrode or disintegrate. It is necessary to ensure that circuit boards and other electronic components function properly after exposure to heat or smoke.

What Does Smoke Do To Electronics?

Smoke damage can cause a black film to develop over internal electronic components. This residue may cause malfunctions, such as:

  • Overheating
  • Short-circuiting
  • Electrical fires

Black film is formed when smoke adheres to any dirt or dust that is already present in electronics. An owner can attempt to clean out corrosion or film, but this effort is more likely to be successful when attempted by fire cleanup professionals.

How Do Experts Clean Up Damage?

Restoration specialists will remove electronics from the scene of a fire for cleanup off-site in a dedicated facility. This may involve:

  • Removing corrosion or residues
  • Attempting to retrieve data
  • Providing proof of loss

Even if a device is no longer functional, it may still be possible to retrieve data stored on a hard drive or memory card. Experts may also be able to completely restore devices that have only suffered slight damage.

Exposure to smoke can cause corrosion or residues to form on the internal components of electronic appliances and devices. While a non-professional may attempt to clean contents after a house fire in Belton, TX, trained fire cleanup professionals working in controlled environments are likely to achieve the best results with delicate components inside electronics.

Hallway with water damage in Marlin, TX

5 Maintenance Measures That May Prevent the Need to File an Insurance Claim

Nearly half of small businesses end up filing insurance claims within 10 years of operation. It may be possible to avoid filing a business claim by performing regular maintenance at a commercial structure in Marlin, TX. Here are five maintenance measures that may prevent the need to file an insurance claim.

1. Prevent Pipes From Freezing

Pipes exposed to frigid temperatures run the risk of freezing. If this occurs, pressure buildup may result in a pipe break and water damage. Insulate pipes that are likely to freeze and heat a building during cold weather.

2. Schedule Preventative Plumbing Maintenance

Preventative maintenance may enable building owners to avoid filing a business claim. It is a good idea to have a licensed plumbing inspector check pipes every year or two. A building owner or manager should be aware of the age, condition, and pipe material in a structure.

3. Maintain the Building Envelope

The envelope of a commercial structure shields the interior from exterior elements. Maintaining this protective layer can limit condensation, prevent leaks, and keep cooled or heated air from escaping.

4. Keep Drainage Clear

It is a good idea to clear the drainage system twice a year and check every component for functionality. Downspouts, gutters, and roof drains can keep water from collecting and undermining roofing materials or causing problems around the base of a structure.

5. Inspect Critical Systems and Appliances

Malfunctioning systems such as the HVAC, electrical wiring, or plumbing can cause problems at a commercial building. Owners or managers should schedule regular inspections of systems and appliances that pose any risk of fire or water damage.

These measures may prevent the need to file a business claim. Regular maintenance can resolve most issues before major damage occurs. Rely on commercial maintenance services and, if worst comes to worst, a mitigation and restoration company located in Marlin, TX.

Storm Shutter Choices and Your Budget

11/18/2018 (Permalink)

Storm Shutters

While decorative shutters are popular window accents throughout the United States, in regions prone to high winds, the functional kind can be a necessity. Depending on your environmental conditions and aesthetic preferences, a wide variety of storm shutters are available to fit the weatherproofing needs of your home.

1. Colonial

The look most typically associated with classic shutters, the colonial type are hinged panels on either side of the window that can be latched closed in case of a storm. These can be made of steel, aluminum, wood, or composite materials and can be easily painted to match the existing exterior design. They range from $200-$500.

2. Bahama

Another iconic visual design, the Bahama type of storm shutters are hinged at the top and prop open to double as a window shade similar to an awning. Depending on the choice of materials, the Bahama option runs upwards of $200 per window.

3. Accordion

True to its name, the accordion style is built from long, interlocking metal panels that fold up into a box when not in use. Before a weather event with high winds, the shutter can be extended across the window and locked in place to prevent rain and debris from entering the home. This type is best suited to larger exterior fixtures such as sliding glass doors and can range from $15-$25 per square foot of coverage.

4. Roll-Up

While this style also uses a storage box when not in use, the bay is typically mounted to the top of the window. Unlike the accordion design, roll-up shutters are more lightweight and can be used as window blinds in addition to storm protection. They come in a wide variety of decorative styles, can be manual or powered, and range from $20-$30 per square foot.

These are four of the most popular solutions available to homeowners in Belton, TX, seeking to protect their home from high winds and other storm perils. These fashionable, permanent designs are superior to temporary storm preparations such as plywood and can prevent the need for post-storm cleanup from a professional specialist.

If there's time to turn off your copiers, computers, and other electronics; and carry those items up to higher levels of the building. When outlets go under the water, there could be an electricity risk. If you have gas heating, that system could also pose a safety risk.

3. Use filters. Removing the smoke odor from the surface of your home may not be enough for a complete home deodorization. The smell can actual cling to particles in the air. You can use a commercial-grade air filter to improve the air quality and smell in your house.

4. Try ozone machines. An ozone machine sends out special molecules that act like smoke particles. The molecules cover all of the surfaces in your home, just like the cigarette smoke did. The difference is the new molecules remove the odor rather than cause it.

5. Replace items. The smelly smoke from a cigarette cannot be removed from every item. If you have a piece of furniture that will not let go of the foul odor, you may need to replace it to ensure your home does not start to smell again.

3 Key Differences Between Mold and Mildew

9/9/2018 (Permalink)

If you have mold damage in your home If you have mold damage in your home or you are concerned about potential mold growth, contact SERVPRO!

Mold and mildew are types of fungi, but not the kind anyone in Temple, TX, wants to find in their residence. Mold damage can be a problem for homeowners, and finding mildew growth can be equally worrying, especially when it can be difficult to tell the two apart. However, these fungi have some differences, and the treatment procedures used by many professionals will depend on the fungi type. There are three key differences that may help you differentiate between the two.

1. Appearance

In many cases mold growth is determined by its greenish color and fuzzy appearance. It may also be brownish or black, and in some cases, it can look slimy. Mildew usually looks like a grey or white patch, but it may also be orange in color. It tends to have a flatter growth pattern, and it may look more powdery.

2. Growth Type

Both types of fungi grow in wet areas and like warmer conditions, but that’s where the similarity ends. As is often noted in situations where mold damage is found, mold can grow into and inside areas such as walls. Mildew, however, stays on the surface and prefers more organic substances such as cloth, paper or plants.

3. Growth Area

The growth covered area can also be an indicator of the type of fungi. Mold has a tendency to grow and spread quickly until it becomes an infestation. Mildew growth is often slower, and it can usually be caught before it spreads too far.

If you have mold damage in your home or you are concerned about potential mildew or mold growth in Temple, TX, then speaking with a mold professional may be an option to consider. Remember, that while both fungi like warm and wet environments, they have some key differences in appearance, growth type and area. They can also require different treatment methods. Keep Fire from Charring Your Business Property in 4 Steps

8/20/2018 (Permalink)

Even the best fire preparation can sometimes not fully stop damage to your business.

Your Temple, TX, business is susceptible to significant loss from a sudden fire if it’s not properly protected. Fire preparation is necessary to protect assets and minimize losses. Using these four steps for disaster preparation, you can intervene when a fire strikes to minimize any losses you sustain.

1. Establish and Explain the Plan Beforehand

An established safety plan, regardless of business size, mitigates panicked reactions that otherwise would leave a fire unanswered. With a few escape routes laid out using signage and training, an action plan follows.

An action plan establishes responsibilities for deploying emergency services without delay, putting out manageable fires and identifying vital equipment for employees to evacuate if safety isn’t threatened. By working as a team with everyone playing a part, fire damage can be stopped from claiming every essential asset.

2. Fireproof Your Business

The largest risks for fire are electrical appliances and utilities that generate flames. Electrical items should be unplugged when unused and inspected before plugging in for frayed or damaged cords. Any surge protectors or power strips need occasional evaluation for overload risk as a fire preparation precaution.

If paper or other flammable materials are typically stored by an electrical outlet or very hot location such as an open flame, they should be relocated somewhere away from these hazards. Any flammable chemicals are regulated by OSHA and should be safely stored according to procedure.

3. Regularly Inspect Everything

With smoke alarms to alert everyone early enough and fire extinguishers to fight lesser blazes, your plan plays out more smoothly. Both of these are first line defense that can become defective. Occasional testing of the alarms and verification of an extinguisher’s expiration dates makes sure they are functional when they’re needed.

4. Know What to Do in the Aftermath

Even the best fire preparation can sometimes not fully stop damage to your business. Fire damage can, fortunately, be repaired by an expert restoration company. With procedural prevention, the damage can be minimized enough, and restoration can restore the burnt areas and items to be functional and clean. Understanding How Floods Create Consequential Mold Problems

7/25/2018 (Permalink)

A flood is like a disaster that hits you with multiple attacks. The first round of moving water is actually dangerous and damaging in its powerful movement, the second attack is in the exposure of water contaminated with bacteria and other biohazards, and lastly there is the sneak attack of mold growing in moist materials. Fast action is the key to prevent water and mold damage after a flood in Temple, TX.

Mold Facts.

Mold growth happens rapidly. Spores are all around us in the air we breathe and when they settle in a damp area with a good food source they can start forming colonies. When you know what mold needs to reproduce, you'll understand why a flooded home is a ticking time bomb for mold development. Here are some fast facts about mold:

• Mold is a fungus that reproduces by spores
• Spores float through the air and enter buildings through windows, doors, and HVAC systems
• Mold needs moisture
• Mold needs an organic food source, such as cellulose found in wood and paper
• Mold growth begins in about 48 hours after a flood

By the way, most of those wet building materials in your home are made with wood and paper. Once the colonies begin, it's very difficult to prevent mold from developing in nearby areas since spores will be in an even higher concentration in the air. With more spores in the air and plenty of wet building materials, your flooded home is a breeding ground for mold.

Clean and Dry.

So now that you understand how quickly these flood dangers can escalate, you understand that water removal and drying are the key to preventing subsequent damage from standing water. The job is huge, but you can count on professionals to apply their knowledge and resources to get it done right. They will use special equipment to extract water and dry building materials and personal items all while monitoring moisture levels to ensure thorough drying. Quick and efficient water restoration will help prevent mold growth.

Imagine the terror of running room to room searching for them. Now, instead visualize your children prepared for this emergency situation. • Create a fire escape plan. Find two ways out of each room and agree on an outdoor meet up place. Get escape ladders for the second floor.
• Teach your children how to call 911.

Practice .

Practice techniques to evacuate your home efficiently if necessary:

• Twice a year, run through the fire escape plan with your children.
• Practice how to stop, drop and roll if clothing catches on fire.
• Have your kids practice staying low in a fire. This includes rolling off of the bed and crawling on the floor.
• Rehearse checking doors for heat and closing them as you go.
• Repeat, “Get out, stay out,” when practicing to emphasize the importance of not returning inside of the house once out.

3 Secrets You Didn’t Know About Mold

7/13/2018 (Permalink)

Trying to deal with black mold growth during the rainy seasons in Temple, TX, can become quite the task. It becomes tiresome to clean up flood water, but it’s much worse to deal with the mold damage that comes as a result. Frustrating as it seems, it’s important to understand mold in order to begin dealing with it.

1. Mold Is Found Everywhere.

Even though you can’t see them, black mold spores can be found almost anywhere you look. When mold spores are in their dormant state, they will not form into the telltale black spots until they find a suitable place to start growing.

After mold has dried, the spores take on the characteristics of dandelion seeds and use their newly exposed cellular legs like a parachute in the wind to search for the next damp spot to settle down. That’s why it’s almost impossible to isolate mold if you have a moisture problem in your building.

2. Mold Eats Too.

Like all organisms, mold requires not only an environment to thrive in but also a food source. Made up of billions of organisms, growing mold will devour almost anything it is growing, on including wood, carpet, drywall and any material that has been made with organic matter.

Over time, this can create weaknesses in structures and walls, which can cause them to collapse or cave in. Many building materials are built to withstand minor or temporary water buildup, but they can’t always prevent mold from taking over and creating catastrophic damage.

3. Mold Can Survive in Almost Any Environment.

Although growing mold prefers warmth and moisture, it can survive almost anywhere. Mold has been found to spread even in cold or dry locations; however, the process may take longer. If for any reason the growing process stops, mold will then dry up and move on to a new location or stay dormant until the environment is suitable again.

Black mold can be a nightmare to deal with for property owners in Temple, TX. A skilled restoration service can help you with mold cleanup to recover from a devastating outbreak.

Best Ways to Clean up After Your Water Heater Leaks

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

There are many ways you home can experience water damage. Most people may think of broken pipes or issues with the foundation, but don’t neglect to check your water heater. A leaking water heater can cause costly problems and leave your floor, belongings and other appliances in a mess. Fortunately, if you discover that your water heater is losing water, there are some simple, effective ways you can clean up and save your Temple, TX, home from significant damage.

Create a Safe Scene

When you’ve got a failed water heater, you need to worry about more than just water getting your floor wet. You need to think about nearby appliances and hazards this can create. You should unplug the following items in the area to ensure they aren’t damaged and don’t pose dangers of shock or electrocution:

• Washer
• Dryer
• Air conditioner/furnace
• Water softener

Remove wet Items

Though you may not be able to salvage everything that your broken water heater affects, you should remove carpet, padding and anything else you can safely and easily move. Without delay, begin drying out these items with fans or other professional equipment. This will reduce the risk of mold and increase your chances of being able to use them again.

Pay Attention to the Floor

It’s important to remember that you may not know how long you’ve had a leaking water heater. This is a problem you may have been having in your Temple, TX, home for weeks or even months. Thoroughly dry the floor with towels and a wet vacuum. You should then disinfect the area with high-quality products.

A leaking water heater isn’t something you should disregard or put off addressing. If you follow these basic tips, you should be able to preserve much of the area and items that the water affected. You can then have peace of mind that your home is safe.

Is Business Interruption Insurance Necessary if I Have Property Insurance?

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

Have you considered what you would do if a disaster or accident forced your business to close down temporarily? Have you thought about the money you’d lose as you work to rebuild? You’re not just losing profit but continuing to pay monthly bills like utilities and rent. Property and disaster insurance policies generally do not cover losses of revenue and expenses. This is why carrying business interruption insurance is critical for any business owner. Here are three important things you need to know as you prepare to insure a closed business.

1) What Does It Cover?

If you have a business that is closed in Temple, TX, interruption insurance can compensate you for the income you lose during the time that you are unable to be open due to a disaster covered under your property insurance policy. Coverage typically starts 48 hours after your company has closed down. A reasonable determination can be made, based upon your previous financial records, of the amount of revenue and operating expenses you are losing by not being open.

2) How Much Do I Need?

Interruption insurance is an area where it’s important not to scrimp. Even the smallest of disasters can derail a company for weeks, while a restoration company works to rebuild your property. It’s often far better to be prepared and pay a slightly higher premium each month than to run out of money when your company is still a long way from resuming operations.

3) How Is Cost Determined?

Interruption insurance is not a separate insurance policy. It’s generally added to property insurance or bundled as part of a package policy. The largest factors in determining coverage are the type of business and location. If your company operates machinery or kitchen equipment, it may carry a higher risk than a call center.

Nobody wants to think about what it would take to rebuild their business. But with a business interruption insurance policy, you can have considerably less to worry about.

How Can Fire Damage Cause Water Damage?

5/20/2018 (Permalink)

In the event of a fire, your Temple, TX property may need a good deal of fire cleanup work, even if there was only damage from smoke. Yet did you know you may need to handle water cleanup, as well? After a fire, water damage is just as likely as smoke or fire damage.

So How Does It Happen?

Water damage usually happens in one of three ways:

• Pressure and high-volume water saturation from fire hoses used by firefighters to douse the blaze.
• Burst water mains and pipes damaged during th efire.
• Sprinklers activated by smoke.

Each of these instances can saturate your belongings in water, which can be highly damaging for electronics and inventory. Water cleanup is imperative as you recover your property from catastrophe, and to prevent additional health and safety issues caused by standing or stagnant water.

How Can I Prevent Water Damage?

It may not be possible to wholly prevent water damage, when much of it happens during times when you should either be in the process of evacuating the building or should have already evacuated. However, you can make it a practice to cover your inventory with waterproof materials, and cover your electronics once you leave for the day.

How Do I Clean Up After Water Damage?

The first step of water cleanup is safety. Water conducts electricity, and after a fire you may have exposed wiring or other safety hazards. Do not enter the building until a fire professional has cleared it as safe. Once you are able, dry the building as much as possible. Mop water from the floors and wipe down any surfaces. Open windows and doors to air everything out, and tear out waterlogged carpet and drywall. Haul anything wet out into the sun to dry. Take inventory of everything water-damaged and keep accurate records for your insurance company.

3 Strategies for Fighting Bathroom Grout Fungi

5/13/2018 (Permalink)

When it comes to weekend chores, cleaning the bathroom is probably not your favorite task as a Temple, TX, homeowner. Scrubbing the toilet and wiping up hair and soap residue from the sink can be daunting work, but one issue you may find especially challenging is how to remove bathroom mildew from your shower’s grout. This fungus can be stubborn once it dries into the grout; however, there are a few strategies you can use to banish it for good.

1. Create a Natural Cleanser

If you want to avoid the harshness and strong odors of bleach-based household cleansers, you can make one out of natural ingredients. You will need lemon juice, baking soda and vinegar. Mix the vinegar and lemon juice together in equal portions, then add the baking soda slowly until it forms a paste. Spread this mixture onto the grout and let it sit for twenty to thirty minutes. The ingredients in the paste should loosen the mildew and make it easier to wash away.

2. Soak the Grout Overnight in a Dishwashing Solution

When the entire family takes hot showers, this can create a humidity problem that causes mildew to form in the shower wall’s grout. If you want to avoid scrubbing this fungus away, you can soak the tile overnight in a solution of blue dishwashing liquid and a touch of white vinegar. In the morning, simply rinse the grout and wipe away any film left behind.

3. Call a Professional Mold Removal Service

If you are dealing with severe bathroom mildew, you may want to call in a professional mold remediation and removal company for assistance. Qualified technicians can bring in a variety of tools and cleaning solutions that are not available publicly to deal with stubborn mildew. These techs may also be able to provide you with strategies for keeping grout clean in the future.

Dealing with bathroom mildew in your Temple, TX, home can be frustrating. However, keeping these cleaning tactics in mind can help you banish fungus safely and effectively.

Is Your Fire Extinguisher the Right One for Your Home?

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

While most folks would agree having a fire extinguisher is important, would you know how many to have or what kind to own based on your house and who lives inside? When buying yours, keep the following in mind:

1. Who will use it
2. Where it could be used
3. How to use it effectively

Who Will Be Using Your Extinguisher?

Since household extinguishers can weigh anywhere between 1 and 20 pounds, your first consideration is how much weight the primary user can lift and carry quickly toward a home fire. Rechargeable extinguishers with metal valves will cost more upfront but will cost less to refill than a disposable one. However, if a refillable one is too heavy for a family member to aim quickly, then a smaller disposable canister with a plastic valve should be used.

Where Should Canisters Be Located?

Household extinguishers come in three types: Category A - combats combustibles; Category B - combats flammables; and Category C - combats electrical fires. An A:B:C-classified extinguisher will fight all three kinds of fires. The minimum number of extinguishers recommended for a typical family home is one per floor, but also consider having a fire extinguisher in your garage, laundry room, car and kitchen. Just remember not to use them over a deep fryer as the chemicals could cause the grease to run and make the blaze larger.

How To Operate Your Extinguisher

No fire preparedness plan would be complete without knowing how to use your extinguisher. The first step is to pull the safety pin. Next, stand at least 6 feet from the fire while directing the chemicals at the source of the flames. Then release the chemicals by squeezing the trigger continuously. Finally, move the stream from side to side until there is nothing left inside of the canister. In case of smoke damage, contact a Temple, TX, fire restoration specialist.

Take some time to learn about extinguishers for your home. Then you can sleep easily knowing you have the right fire extinguisher and the right skills to protect your loved ones when it counts.

How To Properly Rid Your Office Building Of Mold

4/22/2018 (Permalink)

Whether you’re in an office building or in a home in Temple, TX, mold cleanup is a difficult task. By the time you notice it, the mold contamination may have already gotten out of hand, and getting rid of it is no longer a minor operation. While it may be tempting to try a standard janitorial cleanup, if you spot mold around your office, it’s best to contact a mold remediation specialist that can recommend mold containment procedures and complete a safe cleanup. Here are steps you should take to contain the mold and get rid of it as safely as possible.

Look for Signs and Stay Away

Most people are familiar with the general look and smell of mold. However, you should know the difference between active and inactive mold. Actively growing mold is slimy or fuzzy and can be black, orange, green or even purple. Inactive mold is usually powdery and white.

Mold spores spread very fast. They can travel through the air or be carried around on people. As a result, you should ensure that neither you nor anyone else in your office comes in close or extended contact with the mold.

Contact a Professional

Once you notice mold, your first step should be to immediately call a qualified mold cleanup professional. If the mold is visible, it’s highly likely that it has already reached dangerous levels. Before the specialist arrives, you can lower the temperature in the office as mold loves warm and wet environments.

Once he or she has completed the assessment, the specialist can use various techniques to protect against cross-contamination. These include isolating the area with physical barriers and using negative air pressure to keep the spores from spreading.

Mold cleanup is a serious job and is not one that should be handled by your office building’s traditional cleaning crew. Working with a specialist can ensure that the mold is removed according to appropriate safety codes and guidelines.

How To Reduce Mold Risk After a Pipe-Bursting Fiasco

4/15/2018 (Permalink)

The speed at which a property owner responds following a run-in with bursting pipes is often vital in reducing the risk of the following:

• Water damage
• Mold development
• A dangerous environment

To prevent damage from occurring, you should understand why pipes burst and when to call for cleanup help.

Uncovering Why Pipes Break in the First Place

You’re likely aware that winter temperatures often affect pipes, but you may not know why. The molecules that crystalize when water freezes take up extra room in the pipe—more than the molecules do when in water’s liquid form. As water molecules swell, pressure between the ice blockage and faucet causes the pipe to rupture.

Bursting pipes can occur inside or outside, but they sure make for a bigger mess when they burst in an interior space of a building. Broken pipes are never pleasant to deal with, but there are steps that can be taken to reduce the stressful situation. While you may already have called a specialist to fix a broken pipe, there’s something even more pressing to consider: the daunting cleanup that lays before you.

Cleanup Services to the Rescue

Whether the pipe burst resulted in clean water, grey water or black water damage, the cleanup is potentially hazardous if the person responsible is not professionally trained. This is particularly the case if the pipe break causes black water damage, which typically calls for the most invasive and time-consuming cleaning process out of any other category, and could even result in the need for demolition and rebuilding.

A cleanup crew should supply their knowledge about mold risks. Additionally, they should also possess the materials needed to get your building back to its sparkling condition.

Bursting pipes don’t have to be the end of the world. Do yourself a favor and keep the contact information of a local cleanup service to deal with water damage in Temple, TX, on hand to refrain from wasting time after your building’s pipes burst.

5 Steps to Cleaning Your Home After Storm Flooding

4/10/2018 (Permalink)

If your home in Temple, TX, experiences flooding due to a storm, you may think your biggest concern is to get the water out and dry everything off. Storm water differs from water from a regular broken pipe because it often contains sewage and other contaminants from the outside. While some of these contaminants may be chemicals, many of them are microorganisms and bacteria, which may continue to grow in any materials they soak into. When dealing with what is often called black water, drying things out is ordinarily only part of the process to clean and restore your home.

1. Removing Water

The first step is commonly to wait for flooding to recede, which may not be until well after the storm is over. After water recedes, any water that is left can be removed by restoration technicians using extractors to pull the water out of the home, as well as out of any carpeting so that it can be removed later.

2. Containing Damage

Before beginning other clean-up, take a look at parts of your home that did not incur flood damage. To reduce contamination between the areas, section off these items from those that are damaged.

3. Removing Material

Any porous surface that came into contact with sewage likely needs to be removed. This means that carpets and pads are typically pulled up completely, and drywall and wood floors are often cut out.

4. Disinfecting

You should kill any mold or bacteria. A disinfectant may be sprayed on any remaining surfaces in the flooded area.

5. Drying

Finally, check for any areas that are still damp. Any remaining wetness can be dried out with air circulation.

It can be hard to deal with any type of water damage, but flooding from a storm often brings its own set of challenges. Keeping in mind these five steps can help you plan your clean-up efforts in Temple, TX.

3 Actions You Can Take To Bolster Coverage Against Plumbing Floods

3/21/2018 (Permalink)

Your Temple, TX, home's plumbing may not be something you think about often-that is, until it malfunctions and causes a flood. The damage this event creates can be considerable as well as costly. However, if you have an all-perils insurance policy that covers plumbing mishaps, there are a few actions you can take to strengthen your coverage in case the worst should happen.

1. Read Your Flooding Policy's Fine Print

Assuming you have insurance coverage against plumbing floods and for repairs may leave you in serious financial trouble if you are mistaken. Most general homeowner's insurance does not cover flooding, and even if you have an all-perils policy, it may not cover the cost to fix a broken pipe. Knowing the terms outlined in your insurance policy can prevent unpleasant surprises during a flooding emergency.

2. Maintain Your Plumbing

Maintaining and caring for your home's plumbing can help you avoid negligence claims in case of flooding. Insulate your pipes in cold weather to keep them from cracking or bursting and replace worn or old sections regularly. Your insurance company may claim that you were negligent otherwise and could refuse your claim, leaving you to cover the cost of repairs and expense of the services of a qualified flood cleanup and restoration company.

3. Increase Your Aftercare Premiums

Paying into premiums for flooding aftercare can benefit you greatly when a plumbing mishap occurs. Depending on the type of coverage offered in your area, you can pay into coverage for most repairs and to replace destroyed items such as carpeting, wood floors and drywall. The better your coverage, the less you may have to pay out of pocket after flooding causes substantial water damage to your home.

A plumbing flood in your Temple, TX, home can cause untold damage. Bolstering your all-perils insurance policy by maintaining your plumbing and investing in full coverage can prevent a financial disaster in the wake of flooding.

Supply Line Leaks and Breakage Prevention

3/20/2018 (Permalink)

Where are supply lines located in the house?

Being aware of the different types you have within your own home is the first step toward being
prepared. First, consider the layout or floor plan of your home. Then consider what appliances and
fixtures use water. This can include:

  • Sinks
  • Showers and bathtubs
  • Toilets and bidets
  • Dishwashers
  • Ice makers
  • Washing machines

Leak Prevention

Once you’ve identified the water-using appliances, you can take preventative action. First, look for signs of leakage. While a sink or toilet supply line is easy to see, you may need to refer to the owner’s manual or manufacturer’s website for help with your appliances. You should also look to see if the line is plastic or stainless steel. Having leaks repaired and plastic lines replaced with stainless steel, which offers a lifetime warranty, are two important steps you can take to prevent a broken supply line and avoid water damage or, worse, a flooded home.

Mold Thrives on Moisture

3/20/2018 (Permalink)

While spores can be found everywhere, mold requires certain conditions to really thrive.

You may have a higher chance of having to deal with mold growth if your building is:

• Damp

• Dark

• Warm

• Stagnant

Because moisture is such an important factor for the growth of any mold variation, including black mold, you may want to have your building inspected if you have plumbing issues, flooding or other water damage.

It Can Survive Dry Conditions

The spores of the fungus can actually survive in dry conditions. Often, mold starts sending out these particles as it dries up and dies. Because the spores themselves can float in the air looking for a new home, cleanup crews need to remove as much of the mold from your building as possible to limit your chances of a recurring problem.

Black mold often starts growing after a moisture problem. As you get ready for a mold cleanup in Temple, TX, ask questions until you feel comfortable with the remediation process.

Steps To Take If Pipes Burst

3/20/2018 (Permalink)

What should I do if my pipes freeze?

A pipe burst cleanup is no laughing matter. You could potentially be dealing with large amounts of water. As soon as you discover a problem, turn off the main water supply. If you are unable to turn off the water supply, tell your plumber it is an emergency. You may need to shut down the power if water starts seeping from the ceiling or walls.

If you have an immersion heater or central heating system, it is wise to turn it off. This will prevent any damage from trying to heat an empty system. Now that you have taken measures to prevent the problem from getting worse, try to save any important documents or content inside the building that could get damaged.

The pipe burst cleanup may require water mitigation professionals in Temple, TX. You need to remove all the water and dry the building out completely. Depending on the extent of the damage, it could require the use of special equipment.

When dealing with major water damage, speed is important. You want to get things dry before the damp has a chance to set in.

This moldy or mildew smell is a bad odor that will alert you that there is excess dust and moisture in the ductwork that needs to be cleaned as soon as possible.

Air duct cleaning should always be done by a professional company, since there is often a lot of ductwork in the home that has to be professionally cleaned. The professionals bring all of their own equipment to your home to get the job done, ensuring that you feel confident that it is done in an expert manner. It is recommended that you have duct cleaning done at least once or twice every year, since this will help to get rid of any dust or debris that is found within the ductwork system.

Tips to keeping mold growth at bay.

3/20/2018 (Permalink)

Understanding Mold

Some restoration companies advertise “mold removal” and may even guarantee to remove all mold. Here are the facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Put Away Important Documents Before a Storm

2/27/2018 (Permalink)

Many important documents can’t be replaced.

This can include financial or other business information. Once these documents have sustained storm damage, it's difficult and costly to restore them. You can file documents away in plastic, airtight containers or a waterproof safe and store them on higher ground away from the flooding.

If you’re dealing with flood potential in Temple, TX, you have to remember that preparation is usually the key to dealing with less damage. The more that you prepare, the easier it will be to restore everything when it’s finished. Even if you aren’t sure the flood damage will be extensive, it’s better to be safe.

Quick Facts About Mold

2/23/2018 (Permalink)

As a business owner, you have to be familiar with a lot of different processes. You need to know how to market your business and keep your facilities in good condition. These tasks may not always go hand-in-hand, but it is good for you to keep on top of everything to ensure your company thrives.

Why do I get mold in my building?

If you have had a recent moisture problem, you may be concerned about the growth of black mold or another mold variation. You can learn a bit about this fungus to better understand the importance of calling in a professional mold cleanup crew.

It Occurs Naturally

Mold is not something that simply appears out of nowhere. There are actually spores in the air no matter where you go. The microscopic particles can be found indoors and outdoors. Often, these spores enter your building through windows, doors and vents. Some may even hitch a ride on your customer's pants or shoes. It is only after moisture is introduced that the mold spores become a problem.

Fire Damage and Water Damage Go Hand in Hand

2/16/2018 (Permalink)

At first thought, it seems odd to discuss the results of fire damage and water damage in the same conversation. However, when a fire erupts and immediate action is necessary to quell the flames, the first response — whether through human intervention or system activation — is almost always to use water. If you’re forced to deal with fire, smoke or water cleanup in Temple, TX as a result of a commercial fire, it’s advised that you seek professional help from expert restoration specialists who know how to handle all three. Here are a few things experienced technicians will do to overcome these hurdles after a fire disaster:

1. Experts address water cleanup by removing excess water quickly and implementing drying techniques. They have advanced equipment essential for removing large quantities of water as quickly as possible to help prevent further damage. Once the liquid has been extracted, technicians work to dry and dehumidify the space to force any lasting water in your porous walls or belongings to seep out, expediting the drying process for your building.

2. Any fire damage is cleaned up and restored through the careful washing of soot and debris. It’s important to eliminate the effects of a fire immediately before the damage has time to set and become worse over time. Knowing who to call and how to proceed is crucial, as repair specialists can work quickly to wipe down soot and dirt from your walls and belongings while using industrial-strength cleaning agents to restore your upholstery and carpets.

3. Clearing out smoke odor is implemented through deodorization. Experts use professional-grade deodorizing solutions to eliminate smoke damage, removing any lasting smells from the premises with ease.

Since fire and water damage generally combine as a result of commercial fires, finding suitable technicians who have knowledge and experience in both water cleanup and fire cleanup is necessary. After all, having all repairs covered at once means a faster recovery period for your building.

Cleaning Up After a Broken Water Heater

1/17/2018 (Permalink)

Broken water heaters lead to money spent on resolving the issue, but neglecting to resolve all issues stemming from a leaking water heater can quickly become costly. Left unsolved, water issues can evolve into appliance repairs, wall and flooring replacement and more. By following a few simple steps, you can ensure that you don’t have to pay thousands of dollars extra for your failed water heater.

1. Drying as Top Priority

If you are facing a broken water heater in Temple, TX your priority should be to clear out the water, then dry the affected areas. Clearing a mess from a damaged water heater can be made easier by using drain pipes and renting vacuum cleaners specially designed for water removal. You may also wish to consider renting an industrial fan to speed air flow through the affected space.

2. Cleaning Is Crucial

Water coming from a leaking water heater is usually classified by insurance specialists as Category 2 water; this kind of water is not terribly dangerous, but it can still cause problems if the area is not cleaned. Be sure to sanitize the affected areas thoroughly to ensure that mold and other undesirables are not allowed to infect your home.

3. Calling a Professional

Finally, calling a reputable water removal professional can ease your mind and mitigate any lingering concerns. These professionals have the expertise to examine everywhere the leaked water could have affected – including underneath flooring and inside walls. So much potential damage from water issues occurs in invisible places, so it’s important to have a water removal specialist on-site.

If you’re dealing with a leaking water heater, just remember three simple steps: Dry it, clean it, and call a professional. By taking quick action to remediate water issues, you can resolve the problem without breaking the bank. Visit http://www.SERVPROtemplebelton.com for more information on water damage.

How To Mitigate Against Frozen Pipes

1/17/2018 (Permalink)

One of the most common causes of property damage is water.

Most water-damage claims are caused by bursting pipes or a supply line leaking. A pipe burst cleanup can be very extensive.

Preventing Bursting Pipes

When temperatures start to drop, frozen pipes are one of the biggest risks of commercial property damage. Many pipes are located in the basement of a building where there is no heat. Before temperatures start dipping down below freezing, take some preventative measures. Insulate all pipes that are outdoors or in unheated areas of your building. You can also use heat tape for an extra layer of precaution if you live in an extremely cold climate.

Allowing the water to run at a slow drip helps relieve pressure if the pipes do freeze. Inspect your pipes regularly for any small leaks. Undetected leaks can lead to major damage.

Washington Machine Hoses

11/20/2017 (Permalink)

A broken supply hose causes more than half of all water damage insurance claims. These insurance claims are costly. The average claim is around $6,000. If the homeowner fails to monitor the condition of the hose, it can burst. A busted hose can spill hundreds of gallons of water within an hour. A few tips to remember are:

  • Buy proper length hoses when installing a washing machine or replacing old hoses. Select a length to fit the space rather than trying to force a proper fit.
  • Allow enough space between the wall and the machine to avoid kinks in the hoses. Aim for 3” to 4” but adjust as needed to avoid sharp bends in the hoses.
  • Inspect washing machine hoses regularly. At minimum check the hoses once or twice a year. Keep an eye out for kinks, damage, rust or snags in the braided stainless steel, and signs of a leak.
  • Shut off water supply valves when not in use and when you will be away from home such as when vacationing. The constant water pressure on the washing machine hoses can contribute to hose failure.
  • Replace washing machine hoses regularly. Read the manufacturer’s recommendations and install new hoses as suggested. If the hose is more than five years old, there is an increased risk of it wearing out. More than 80 percent of hoses fail between their sixth and tenth year of use.

The Hidden Risks of Everyday Plumbing

11/20/2017 (Permalink)

The Hidden Risks of Everyday Plumbing

Whether it’s to take an invigorating shower to start your day or draw a hot bath after a stressful one,
you appreciate having water available at the turn of a faucet. Keeping clothes, dishes and your home
clean and germ-free is so much easier with washing machines, steam cleaners and dishwashers. And
don’t forget how nice it is to get clean, filtered water and ice just by pushing a lever or button on your
refrigerator! But did you know that something as simple as an ice maker supply line can cause water
damage or even a flooded home?

Here’s what every homeowner in Temple and Belton should know.

Don’t Let Water Sit

Even small plumbing leaks can become hazardous if left unattended. With sinks, they can warp the
inside of cabinets and vanities. With appliances, leaks can be hidden because they occur behind walls or
the appliance itself. This, in turn, can lead to floors or walls being damaged. Since any amount of water
damage can turn into mold, it can become dangerous to people and pets.

Inspect Supply Lines

Supply lines carry fresh water throughout the home to your sinks, tubs, toilets and appliances such as
dishwashers or refrigerators with ice makers. If one of these were to break, water would run unchecked
until it was discovered and water to the line was turned off. If left unchecked for several days, it could
easily cause a flooded home. Take measures to avoid a broken supply line by regularly inspecting for
leaks and replacing plastic pipes with stainless steel.

Get Help Right Away

Should the worst occur, don’t despair! Most homeowners’ policies cover this type of event, though it’s always important to check your individual policy to be sure. Most importantly, there are residential
water restoration experts available to remove the water and damaged materials and prevent the growth
of mold.
Whether a leak in your ice maker supply line caused a small area of water damage or a completely
flooded home, getting help from professionals right away is one of the most effective ways to mitigate
your losses. Visit http://www.SERVPROtemplebelton.com for more information on water damage.
